Mice are tactile, agile and curious little creatures. Unfortunately, finding them in your home or business can be scary. They can spread diseases, damage your property, contaminate your food and bring fleas into the home. Implementing effective mice control solutions is the best way to keep you and your family safe.
Mice do not hibernate for the winter and are active all year round, reproducing up to 10 times per year! What starts as a small problem can multiply rapidly, leading to an entire infestation. With mice living up to 18 months, your unwanted lodgers could be around for a very long time!

Signs of a Mouse Infestation
You are probably looking at this page because you have seen a mouse in your home and are trying to understand if you have an infestation. Some common signs of a mouse infestation are;
Mice Droppings
Mouse droppings are black and generally the size of rice, with one mouse producing up to 80 dropping per day! Common areas in your home where you can find these droppings include; roof spaces, in the kitchen or around central heating boilers. Try looking behind your kickboards in the kitchen or the back of a cupboard to see if you can see any mouse activity. If you identify a lot of droppings, this is a definite sign that you have a home infestation which needs addressing.
Sebum
Sebum is the name given to the greasy coating found on a mouse’s fur; this is made up of dirt and oil. This oil is left behind on your walls as they travel through your home. Mice and other rodents do not have excellent eyesight; therefore, they use their sense of touch to navigate their way. This means they will walk against walls, cupboards, doors and furniture to scavenge food.
Other mice will follow this sebum trail and use this route of passage. The darker the sebum trail, the higher the traffic, so if you see a dark brown grease mark, there is a very high chance of an infestation. This sebum will attract other mice, so it is essential to clean this up as soon as you notice the oily marks.
Strong Ammonia Smell
One of the first signs of a mouse problem is the stench. Mouse urine has a powerful, ammonia-like smell which may be stronger in enclosed areas such as cabinets, drawers or near baseboards. Maybe you have noticed a musky scent recently and had no idea where it came from? Try looking around your floors and cabinets to see if you can see crusty yellow marks. Mouse urine can mix with grime and dust and leave behind visible urine trails.
You may also notice small urine puddles (typically near nests) or urine pillars. Urine pillars are mounds of urine, grease and dirt and are particularly visible if your infestation has been active for a long time. This strong odour helps mice mark their territory. Subsequently, if the smell is incredibly potent in your home, this is a clear sign of a much larger pest issue.
Noises
Mice are nocturnal rodents, making mouse activity especially noisy at night. In addition, mice are very timid, so they will try to avoid high-volume areas and shy away from any loud noises. As a result, when you are trying to sleep or working quietly, you may hear scratching inside the walls or on your roof. In addition, as mice navigate your home searching for food, you may hear squeaking, scurrying and crawling.
Although mice can survive outside, they will try to make their way into homes during winter to battle through the colder months. Therefore, noise activity can increase during this colder period as they try to find food and make their nests.
Damage
Various household materials such as; paper, cables, furniture and carpets make for a comfortable mouse nest. You may find nest activity in your loft spaces, inside airing cupboards or even in your kitchen cabinets.
Mice also have front incisors, which are constantly growing. Therefore they must chew and gnaw on various materials, such as cable sheathing or wood, to keep their teeth short. If they do not do this, their teeth could grow to an unsafe level, making it difficult for them to eat, which can cause death.
House Mice vs Field Mice
House Mice: The most common in domestic properties are house mice (Mus musculus)- their fur is a brown/ grey colour and ranges between 60-90mm in size.
Field Mice: (Apodemus sylvaticus) generally live outside and have larger features, a sandy brown coat, and a lighter belly. Although these are not as common in the home, they can still live around your property, causing damage and spreading nasty diseases.
Mice In Your Home
These simple creatures are basic and require just food, shelter and water to survive. They can find your home by accident and enter through a small gap or crack in the brickwork seeking shelter. Mice only require a 6mm gap to enter your property, so they are incredibly flexible! However, you could be advertising your home to mice through improper food storage and high volumes of vegetation around your property.
Diseases
If you have young children living in the home, you risk catching airborne diseases found in mouse urine or droppings. Lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) is a severe viral infection of the spinal cord and brain carried by house mice. In addition, allergies and asthma are other common side effects of an infestation. These rodents will explore everywhere in the home, looking for suitable nesting materials. Resulting in a very high chance of mice walking over your clothes, bedding and towels, which could make you very ill.
It is challenging to understand the extent of your problem without professional help. Your neighbours could also suffer as mice can enter adjacent properties through access in the loft or basements. At Tornado, we enlist the use of pest CCTV to track your infestation and measure it accurately. For more information, please call us at 07377995318, and we will be happy to help!
Mice In Your Business
If your business deals directly within the hospitality sector, mice will be attracted to you as food is readily available. Not only can mice spread diseases and damage property, but they can ruin your reputation with customers. Customers can report you to the local authorities and share negative reviews on social media, which could damage your image.
Mice can chew through food packaging and contaminate ingredients in your stockrooms. As mice carry a lot of diseases, staff members and customers can get sick. This will impact your business and cost you in lost revenue and staff sickness. Mice can also damage your appliances or machinery, which can be incredibly expensive to replace.
Diseases
Under the Food Safety and Hygiene Regulations 2013, it is essential to keep businesses clean and disease free. This is to protect the general public and your staff. Some of these diseases include salmonella, which is spread through direct contact with an infected mouse or mouse droppings and listeria, which can cause nausea, muscle aches, fever and loss of balance.
Legalities
The Prevention of Damage by Pests Act 1949 grants power to local authorities to ensure businesses take action in keeping their land free from mice. Random inspections can occur to check if your company has taken the necessary steps. If you do not keep your business mouse free, you could face forced business closure, legal action, imprisonment and fines.
If you suspect that your business has a mice problem, it is imperative that you act quickly! Contact Tornado for effective Pest Control in Doncaster today at 07377995318 for expert advice and solutions.
